Welcome to our School Council

School Council 2016 - 2017

Among their initial duties the School Council requested an International Day to celebrate the vast cultures and origins within the community of St Joseph’s. It was proposed that a day would be allocated whereby both the children and staff would wear colours designating where their family come from (perhaps share traditions, culture and sample food from different continents). On Wednesday 3rd May everyone entered into the spirit of “International Day”, making it an amazing experience.

Izzy, our Y5 School Council representative commented:
“I loved dressing in my country’s colours and seeing all the traditional clothes that all the children in our school wear. Everyone was excited to talk about their culture.”

In September 2017, each class held an election to select representatives to join the School Council. The children with the most votes must voice their class’ ideas to help improve our school

Thomas, our Year 6 School Council representative added:
“I had a great day – my favourite was learning to do Bollywood dancing and listening to music from lots of different countries in our class. Also we looked up all the countries that we are from on a world map. I had never even heard of some of the countries my friends are from.”

The School Council would like to especially thank the parents who took the time to prepare food and visit classrooms and also to Mrs Holdsworth for organising a multicultural dance session for each class.

The school council have been busy raising the focus of how we can make our school even better. In our classrooms, a poster has been displayed reminding children to:
  • Challenge yourself and aim high
  • Take pride in your work and yourself
  • Don’t give up – we all get things wrong just keep trying until you get it right!
  • Be curious - ask questions and think of ways to find your own answers
  • Be a role model to others
  • Listen to advice from your teacher – learn from it
  • Tell your teacher how you learn best and why
